Description

The Silk River Tapestry is woven by master weaver Mrs. Noot. She uses the Namlai or tapestry technique, which means she has no template to guide her! In order to replicate the pattern perfectly, she has to keep track of the altering weft on her own! Using fine silk threads, she adds the silk weft, row by row, making the pattern as she goes.

Namlai, which literally means abundant water, is one of the most complex weaving patterns we see in Laos. The technique is often used to represent rivers and fish, both vital to livelihood here.
