Description
The Tai Lue Naga Tapestry contains all the main motifs of Lao textiles, while showcasing the three main weaving techniques. The bold, geometric depiction of the Naga, or river serpent, in the central part of the wall hanging uses the namlai technique, one of the hardest to master.
Diamonds, chickens and flowers appear on the bottom and top border, and are woven in the chok or discontinuous supplementary weft technique.
This piece is the handiwork of Mrs. Panee, a master weaver who loves the creativity and nimbleness of the tapestry technique. Her piece depicts the love story between the Naga prince and a beautiful village weaver. Read more of the story in our description of the Tai Taeng Wall Hanging.
