Description

Created to commemorate our 20 years working with Luang Prabang’s master weavers, the Millionaire Naga is all about celebrating the protective, guiding and benevolent Naga spirit.

Mrs. Lear, our head of production, designed this piece. It was inspired by our Queen Naga Wall Hanging, and is a tribute to our mission to empower women in Laos.

This wall hanging is woven using the Discontinuous Supplementary Weft (Chok) technique. Two or more coloured pattern threads are used to make the pattern. The weavers adds the coloured thread by hand as opposed to using a shuttle. This technique is very time consuming. Sometimes a weaver can only weave a few centimeters a day. The wider the cloth, the longer it takes. The smaller one took 190 hours to weave and the bigger one, 300 hours.

While the wall hanging is rooted in traditional techniques, the geometric symmetry and colours give a very modern feel. Handwoven using 100% silk and all natural dyes at the Living Crafts Centre.
