Description

This placemat woven by Lue artisans in Houeyhok village, in the Oudomxay province, features the chicken and flower motifs. The discontinuous supplementary weaving technique was used for this piece. Framed against a solid background, it can also be displayed as a work of art that it is!

Lao textiles are full of symbols and motifs. They represent the stories of Lao people. Instead of writing it down, they weave these stories into textiles. Some motifs are mythical creatures of legends and folktales such as siho (half lion and half elephant). Others are inspired by the natural environment: trees, flowers, clouds, water, lightning, birds and animals.

Since October 2019, in collaboration with the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), we’ve been working with artisans from 6 different villages and 3 provinces. We help them develop ranges of handicrafts that combine craftsmanship and tradition with realistic creativity and market knowledge. Our team of weavers, dyers, designers and tailors transfer their skills to aid artisans to make a better living from handicrafts.

Made in collaboration with Akha artisans through our Village Weavers Project. The outer layer is embroidered in the villages and the clutches are tailored and assembled at our Living Crafts Centre. Learn more about the Akha.
